River News

Happy New Year from DVCP

I've attached a list of our events for 2010.  Obviously
some of these fall in your 'closed' season but am just letting you know in case
your members want to go fly fishing on any of the days mentioned.

The Christmas event obviously doesn't affect you but with
the Duck Race on May Day (3rd May) that would make it difficult if any anglers
came down in the afternoon.

Just a point of interest for members of BMAA over the last
few months a pair of Peregrine falcons have been roosting on the large 'nest'
sign on the Nestle tower.  We have been in touch with Derbyshire Wildlife
Trust/Derby Museum (who are involved in the Derby Cathedral falcons) and, after
letting Nestle know they are there and having meetings with them, Nestle will
be installing a nesting platform (with webcam) to the west side of the large
tower.

It would be marvellous if they did breed there so we've got
our fingers crossed as they are there on a daily basis.  Just thought some
of your anglers might like to bring their binoculars down as they will get a
'bird's eye view' (quite literally) from TPM/the riverbank.

Kind regards - Lynne (dvcp)

DVCP EVENTS 2010

Floating Pennywort

Following my presentation to BMAA about invasive weeds, I am the bearer of bad news. We have found a plant called Floating Pennywort (Hydrocotyle ranunculoides) for the first time on the upper Trent at Burton. I have attached information about the plant and its location at Newton Road playing fields.

This plant is extremely invasive and represents a major threat to biodiversity, recreation and flood risk management. It is extremely difficult to control if not caught quickly. This is where I would like assistance from BMAA. Please could your members contact me if they see this plant on any of your waters. Coors AC, Burton Canoe Club and East Staffs Borough Council will also be on the lookout for it.

I cannot stress strongly enough how much you do not want this plant on your fishing waters. It is certainly easily capable of ending your ability to fish certain waters. Unfortunately it is spreading fast across the UK, however, in this area we may have an opportunity to stop it before it gets fully established.

Trent Pollution

I wonder if you could sign and circulate this link to Petition the Prime Minister to make more serious penalties for serious pollution incidents like the recent one on the river Trent.
